The value of a mentor in your startup

Many founders think that a mentor is someone who will be there “forever.” However, the reality is different: the true value of mentoring is not in the number of meetings, but in the time it helps you save by making the right decisions.

A good mentor knows when to step forward and when to step aside. Their role evolves depending on the stage your startup is in.

1. First 6 months: an extra cofounder
At this early stage, every decision can make a difference. The mentor acts almost like an additional cofounder: they provide weekly or biweekly feedback, help you validate the model, and prevent critical mistakes that could cost months (or even the life of the startup).

2. From 6 to 18 months: validate and adjust the course
Once the first steps are settled, the role changes. Now the key is to validate the actions taken. The mentor becomes the figure who helps you read your metrics, strengthen sales, and prepare for fundraising. Meetings shift to every two or three weeks, becoming more strategic and focused.

3. From 18 to 36 months: strategic vision and scaling
When your startup enters the growth phase, the mentor shifts to strategy. Meetings are usually held monthly, and their key contribution is opening doors: introductions to investors, strategic contacts, and support in scaling decisions.

4. Beyond 36 months: an ally for critical moments
When everything already seems to be on track, the mentor’s role transforms once again. You no longer need such close day-to-day involvement, but they remain that essential ally you turn to for the most critical decisions.

The real ROI of mentoring: time

The most important lesson is clear: more meetings do not equal more value. The real ROI of mentoring is the time you save by avoiding trial-and-error learning.

A good mentor is not measured by always being present, but by giving you what you need most at each stage to move forward faster and with fewer risks.
